Overview
Our programme will ensure that you are well-equipped with the mathematical foundations essential to excel in this dynamic field.
Your Student Experience
Our Expertise
Our academics enrich your learning journey with their research, intersecting applied mathematics and climate and environmental sciences. Their expertise spans key areas including:
- Climate Modelling - Developing computational models to understand and predict climate patterns, extreme weather events, and long-term climate change.
- Ecosystem Modelling - Modelling techniques to study predator-prey dynamics, population ecology, epidemiology, and managing natural resources.
- Sustainability Analytics - Leveraging optimization, statistics and machine learning to evaluate sustainability policies and drive data-based decision making.
- Environmental Risk Assessment - Employing mathematical and statistical methods to quantify climate-related risks and uncertainties.
Your learning environment
With MSc Applied Mathematical Sciences with Climate and Environmental Modelling you will excel in an exceptional learning environment:
- Innovation hubs: As a student, you'll have access to data-driven innovation hubs including the National Robotarium and the GRID, home to the Maths Gym. These hubs offer exceptional opportunities to engage with fellow students and academics; enhancing your academic journey.
- Departmental expertise: Heriot-Watt's Department of Mathematics has been excellent in applied mathematics for over four decades. Our programmes will expand mathematical skills and apply them to real-world challenges, including those in sustainable finance.
- Research Excellence: In the recent Research Excellence Framework (REF2021), we ranked first in Scotland for Mathematical Sciences research and 3rd in UK.
