About

The Spatial Planning programme at Utrecht University provides an invaluable introduction to the professional field and its real-world challenges. And do not be surprised if after your studies, you end up finding employment at the place where you did your internship. Many of our students do.

Overview

Many stakeholders have different ideas on how to use urban land – learn to balance them and find sustainable solutions. As a planner, you are also directly involved in preparing public policy for sustainable cities.

Apply appropriate methods and instruments that contribute to sustainable, smart, and inclusive spatial policy. Learn how to develop innovative concepts and manage complex governance processes for the sustainable use of spatial resources such as land and shape the urban environment of the future.

Objectives of the Spatial Planning programme at Utrecht University

You will be trained in:

  • analysing spatial problems with dedicated spatial research methods;
  • applying innovative knowledge and theories to come up with appropriate solutions;
  • evaluating and prioritising alternative spatial development options;
  • conceptualise governance and management of cities.

Careers

The master Spatial Planning prepares you for a job as an independent and internationally recognized spatial planner in the sphere of policy-, project- and process management, or research.

You will be able to work in the Netherlands or abroad from the local up to the European levels. With a broad perspective and a keen eye for various cultural and institutional contexts, planners are widely employed in a range of organisations.

Some examples:
