Overview
In this specialisation, you will learn how to use chemistry to understand life at the molecular level and interact with it. You will get a comprehensive theoretical basis in biochemistry and hands-on experience in a lab. During one or two internships, you will be responsible for your own experiments, under the supervision of one of our top researchers. We encourage you to explore your dream job during a second internship, which is a perfect stepping stone to your future career.
We stimulate our Master's students to develop a critical mind and a problem solving attitude. Some of them will become the next generation of top scientists, all of them will have a job within a couple of months after graduation. Almost half of our graduates will become a PhD student at a university, while others will work at a research institute in the (bio)chemical or health industry or in one of our spin-off companies. A small portion chooses a job outside of the scientific world, for example as policymaker at a governmental organisation.

Chemistry of Life lasts two years and focuses on using chemistry to understand and interact with life at the molecular level.
Year 1
Compulsory core courses:

Scientific master’s courses in related fields such as natural sciences, computing, or biomedicine
Broadening electives, which may include a minor, a second internship, or courses outside your specialisation
Free electives from any faculty or another university
Year 2
Research internship You will complete a major research internship, including practical laboratory work and a written thesis, carried out in a research group or industrial environment. You may also choose to complete a second internship as part of your broadening electives

General requirements
- Completed Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from a research university (WO) in Chemistry, Molecular Life Sciences, Biochemistry, or another closely related field of science.
- Bachelor’s programme must include coursework in relevant chemical and molecular subjects, such as chemical analysis, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry or thermodynamics, biochemistry, molecular cell biology, bioinformatics, spectroscopy, mathematics, physics, and experimental skills, as well as a Bachelor’s final project including a written thesis. In addition, at least 30 credits of advanced Bachelor’s-level courses in Chemistry or Molecular Life Sciences are required.
- Demonstrable familiarity with research methods, academic writing, and critical thinking (e.g., via thesis or internship).
- Sufficient proficiency in English (for English-taught programmes), via diploma or standard test (e.g., IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge, PTE Academic, or LanguageCert).
