Overview
Students can specialize in one of three programs:
- Master of Arts (MA) for emphasis on human factors,
- Master of Applied Science (MASc) for emphasis on new media technology and design
- Master of Computer Science (MCS) for emphasis on software design.
The Human-Computer Interaction MA/MASc/MCS program from Carleton University is a two-year full-time degree, although part-time study may be considered in some cases. It is expected that students will complete the coursework in the first year of study and the thesis in the second year.
The degree comprises three streams of study (MA, MASc, MCS). All students take the following three courses in the first year: Fundamentals of HCI design and evaluation, Software and user interface development and Emerging interaction techniques. The HCI discipline aims to ensure that interactive computer systems make sense to people by delivering the information they need in the right format and the right modality (speech, text, graphics, animation) at the right time.
Career Opportunities
Students graduating from this program can pursue jobs in diverse fields. From designing cockpits for aircraft, to working on video games or designing cell phone interfaces — all the way to exploring e-commerce purchasing — if you can dream it, this degree can help prepare you for a job in that area. No technology is off limits.
