Overview
The Master’s program in Mathematics at the University of Bern usually follows a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and gives the students an overview of the most important fields of mathematics; it typically takes three semesters.
After obtaining the MSc in Mathematics it is possible to begin a PhD in Mathematics.
Career
After completing the Master’s program it is possible to continue your studies by applying to a PhD program.
Many of our graduates are employed in banks, insurance companies and federal agencies.
Others work in IT companies or as teachers. The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has also employed many of our graduates.
Programme Structure
- The Master's degree in Mathematics (as Major) is worth 90 ECTS points. It consists of a Master module of 60 ECTS points and a Master's thesis of 30 ECTS points.
- The standard study period for the Master's program is 3 semesters (full time). The courses of the Master's program in Mathematics are taught in English.
- The Master Minor in Mathematics is a module consisting of courses worth 30 ECTS points.

General requirements
- Bachelor's degree from a recognized Swiss university with a major in the branch of studies Mathematics
- Bachelor's degree from a recognized university, provided at least 60 ECTS credits were earned in Mathematics and the master's degree program can be successfully completed with a maximum additional 60 ECTS credits (admission requirements which must be fulfilled in order to complete the master's degree program). The ECTS credits will be listed separately in the diploma supplement as extracurricular attainments.
