Overview
The programme in Biomedical Imaging at the University of Turku provides you with strong knowledge on either cellular biology, anatomy and physiology, nanomedicine or biophysics, depending on the area of your specialisation. You will study in a highly international environment and gain excellent theoretical and practical skills in a wide range of imaging techniques and applications as well as in image analysis.
In addition, the courses cover light microscopy, advanced fluorescence techniques, super-resolution imaging techniques, PET, electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. An understanding of the use of multimedia in a scientific context and excellent academic writing skills are emphasised. The interdisciplinary curriculum provides you with a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art knowledge in biomedical imaging related to many different areas in cell biology and biomedicine.
The graduates have the possibility to continue their studies as doctoral candidates in order to pursue a career as a scientist, in industry or science administration, and in an imaging core facility or a hospital research laboratory.

The Biomedical Imaging specialisation track aims to train future imaging and image analysis experts to meet the increasing demand in the fields of basic and medical research as well as the high demand for imaging core facility personnel.

General requirements
You are an eligible applicant if;
- you have a nationally recognized first cycle degree – normally a Bachelor’s degree – from an accredited institution of higher education,
- your degree corresponds to at least 180 ECTS (European credits) or to three years of full-time study,
- your degree is in a relevant field for the Master’s degree programme that you’re applying to. For the Biomedical Imaging, such fields are biochemistry, biology, biomedical sciences, chemistry, engineering, medical sciences, other life sciences, or physics. Applicants should also be familiar with the basics of laboratory practice.
- You provide proof of English language skills:
IELTS: min overall 6.5, writing 6.0+
TOEFL iBT: min overall 92, writing 22+ (tests before 21 Jan 2026); min overall 4.5, writing 4+ (tests after 21 Jan 2026)
Other accepted tests: C1 Advanced, C2 Proficiency, PTE, YKI.

Funding
- The University of Turku supports motivated students with generous scholarships for all Master’s level studies, for students who are subject to tuition fees.
- Scholarships, based on academic merits, cover 50% of the tuition fee for the following study year if requirements are met.
- It is not possible to get a scholarship to cover the tuition fee for the first year, but an Early Bird discount of €2,000 is available for applicants who accept their study offer and pay within the set timeframe.
- There is a separate application process for the merit scholarships. The admission services of the University will invite all eligible applicants to apply for the scholarship when the application round opens.
