Overview
As society moves towards greater sustainability, the materials we rely on, like plastics, fibres, composites and coatings, must evolve. In this programme, you gain the scientific insight needed to understand and develop renewable materials, from their biological origins to their performance in real-world applications.
Based at Brightlands Chemelot Campus and embedded in strong industry–academic partnerships, you study in an environment where research and application meet. Coursework is closely linked to laboratory work, small-scale processing and materials characterisation, giving you experience across the full development chain.
Career:
As a graduate of the Biobased Materials at Maastricht University programme, you go on to shape the future of sustainable materials through a wide range of careers in science, industry and innovation.
- You can pursue PhD research at leading universities and research institutes across Europe and beyond, working on topics such as polymer chemistry, bio-based composites, biotechnology, catalysis and circular materials design.
- Or you could move directly into research and development roles within the chemical, materials and biotechnology sectors, applying your interdisciplinary expertise. Alternatively, you might find a position as a materials scientist, product engineer or sustainability analyst, contributing to innovation pipelines in established companies as well as emerging start-ups.

General requirements
If you have a degree from a university of applied sciences (Dutch HBO or international equivalent) in a related field, you could gain direct access to the master’s programme without the need for a pre-master’s. In any case, you must first apply for the master’s programme. After the selection procedure, the Board of Admissions will decide whether a one-semester pre-master’s programme is required. If you complete the pre-master’s successfully, you qualify for direct admission to the master’s programme.
