Overview

The core curriculum of the European Union Law (International and European Law) programme offered by the University of Amsterdam is composed of compulsory courses and a selection of elective courses that allow different degrees of specialisation. Both the compulsory courses and many of the electives contain distinct ‘EU law in action elements’, that allow students to experience the law in an interactive form.

Key facts

In the first semester, all students attend the compulsory course Principles and Foundations of EU Law and European Constitutional Law and Fundamental Rights. These courses provide you with a deep understanding of the constitutional and institutional structures of the EU. They give you the legal and contextual knowledge and understanding, on the basis of which you can truly comprehend the complex factual and legal situations in which contemporary problems of the EU play out. In the second semester, everyone attends EU Legal Remedies. This course familiarises you with the judicial and procedural framework of EU law in practice.

Bachelor’s degree in law from a research university (Dutch: WO).

A Bachelor’s degree in the law track of PPLE (Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics) from the University of Amsterdam. If you did not complete the law track, then you will need to have obtained at least 45 ECTS of law courses as part of your completed PPLE programme.

A Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts & Sciences from any University College in the Netherlands, including at least 45 ECTS of law courses as part of this completed programme.

A Bachelor’s degree comparable to a Dutch Bachelor’s degree in European Studies or International Relations, including at least 45 ECTS of law courses as part of this completed programme.

A Bachelor’s degree from a research university (Dutch: WO) in another discipline, provided that at least 60 ECTS of law courses were obtained as part of this completed programme.
