Overview
The Bar Training Course programme from Manchester Metropolitan University it’s a course rooted in real experiences. On one hand, you’ll have plenty of face-to-face teaching time, ensuring you get every opportunity to learn from a team that includes seasoned Barristers, Solicitors and Deputy District Judges, together with internationally renowned researchers and scholars. On the other, with our innovative professional practice unit, you’ll be prepared for the demands of the Bar, under the mentorship of a practising Barrister.
We have a long-standing history of delivering Bar training in Manchester. Combined with the strong links we’ve built with the legal profession, both locally and across the Northern Circuit, this is a very professionally-focused course. Put simply, if you want to get onto the path to practice, this is an ideal environment for developing the resilience, confidence and leadership you’ll need to thrive at the Bar.
Career
This is a course created to start careers. It is not only designed around the demands set out by the Bar Standards Board, it’s a qualification built to give you a professional and practical edge when it comes to taking your next steps towards the competitive world of pupillage.
While the course is intended to help you progress onto the Bar, its practical approach and challenging curriculum can also prepare you for a range of other careers, across the legal world and beyond.
Many of our graduates have become Barristers in the UK and internationally, while others have opted for different jurisdictions or roles in other related fields. We’ll be here to help you do the same, with the support of our Careers and Employability Service to help you pursue pupillage and take the next step in your legal career.

General requirements
To be considered for a place on the Bar Training Course, you will normally have to satisfy two criteria:
- You will have an LLB degree, which included the seven foundation subjects (Contract Law, Tort, Criminal Law, EU Law, Public Law, Land Law and Equity and Trusts)
- OR, you will hold a non-law degree and have successfully completed the GDL course (including the seven foundation subjects)
- Plus, you will have obtained a pass in the Bar Aptitude Test.
