Program Details
Following the Modern East Asian Studies program offered by Goethe University Frankfurt students will also improve their language skills. The program is taught in English, and students can take beginner or advanced language classes in Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese, or Korean.
As they progress, they will refine their methodological and theoretical skills by attending lectures and taking electives in various core disciplines, such as history, law, management, and political science.
MEAS is affiliated with Goethe University's Interdisciplinary Center for East Asian Studies (IZO). It is a collaborative program created by four university faculties: Economics and Business, Law, Linguistics, Cultures, and Arts, and Social Sciences.
This interdisciplinary, research-oriented MA program prepares students for a PhD and an academic career related to East Asia, as well as a professional career in this field working in an international enterprise or organization.

- BA degree certificate and transcript of records
- theoretically based and academically sound research proposal (ie a description of a new (individual, ie not co-authored) research project that has not yet been submitted elsewhere, 800–2000 words) on a topic that aligns well with the MEAS program (see Guidelines below)
- English language proficiency certificate
- language proficiency certificate for Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese or Korean (if available)
- university entrance qualification (applicants not enrolled at the Goethe University)
- APS certificate (applicants with a bachelor's degree from China, India or Vietnam)
