Overview

The Language, Literature and Education programme of the University of Amsterdam offers a unique, interdisciplinary approach to the study of language and literature learning, combining linguistics and literature courses in your language of choice with courses in language and literature teaching. Individual components are electives or an internship, and a thesis written in the language of specialisation.

Language and literature in an educational context

Drawing from research and practice, you will take courses in both linguistics and literature. The linguistic strand of the programme focuses on language use, language variation and (foreign) language learning and teaching, while the literary strand zeroes in on the practical and conceptual ties between literature and education, addressing questions such as: How does one ‘teach’ literature? What is it that literature teaches us?

The Master's in Language, Literature and Education prepares you for a broad range of career opportunities.

Teacher Training

After having completed the Master's Programme, graduates can apply for a post-Master teacher training programme. Organised by the Graduate School of Child Development and Education (or equivalent programmes such as Trainees in Onderwijs), the post-Master enables you to obtain a grade-one teacher qualification. You will need to be proficient in Dutch to enrol in these programmes.

The Job Market

Students who already have a teaching qualification may improve their chances on the educational job market after the completion of the Master’s Language, Literature and Education.

Although the programme is geared towards students who want to continue in education, you will gain a valuable foundation for a variety of professions. In the courses and the internship, students develop excellent writing and public speaking skills that will benefit them in a wide variety of professional contexts. Graduates will be able to pursue a career in an advisory capacity at educational organisations or the media.

A Bachelor’s degree from the UvA or from another accredited university, in:

One of the languages the candidate wishes to specialise in with at least 15-20 credits in linguistics and 15-20 credits in literature.

Linguistics, with at least 30 credits in language acquisition and 15-20 credits in both linguistics and literature of the language the candidate wishes to specialise in and a Bachelor’s thesis in or on the language the candidate wishes to specialise in.
