Overview
At the Anthropology Master's degree program at the University of Basel, students concentrate on the main research areas of political anthropology, visual culture, and medical ethnology. At the heart of the course is applied ethnographic research, including six weeks of field research. This takes place in a region of the global south.
Focus of teaching and research
The regional focal points of anthropology at the University of Basel are Africa (mainly West, Central and East Africa), followed by Oceania (especially Melanesia), Latin America and Southeast Asia. In addition to general anthropology with its theories and methods, political anthropology, visual culture, medical ethnology and religious ethnology as well as ethnicity, identity and migration are among the core areas of teaching.
Research focuses on Visual Culture, Political Anthropology and Medical Anthropology. The Department of Ethnology maintains an intensive interdisciplinary and international exchange and cooperates with institutes in several African countries as well as Indonesia. All teachers are also involved in research groups and projects, so there is a lively exchange between research and teaching.
