Overview
The MSc in Nursing Science at the University of Basel's curriculum offers two specializations: Advanced Nursing Practice and Research. The degree program thus focuses on the one hand on the training of Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) with a clinical focus and the aim of these as pacemakers in the health care system contributing to an improvement in patient outcomes and the quality of care, and on the other hand on the training of young scientists for a research-oriented career.
In addition to in-depth nursing skills based on the Advanced Nursing Practice concept, all students acquire solid basic knowledge and skills for scientific work and research. This includes, for example, the development of a competence for the professional care of persons with chronic illnesses and their families.
During their studies, students specializing in Advanced Nursing Practice focus specifically on the challenges of their own clinical context and develop advanced skills (e.g. communication, clinical assessment, methods for role development) in order to be able to take care of complex patient and family situations in their clinical context .
Students specializing in research deepen, expand and reflect on their qualitative and quantitative research knowledge through targeted support in established research projects and learn to use routinely collected data and large data sets for questions of care quality and patient safety in a targeted manner and to plan, implement and evaluate complex interventions.
Career opportunities
Trained nursing scientists are qualified for key positions in clinical practice, research and teaching. According to feedback from practice, the Master’s graduates from the Institute for Nursing Science are highly valued by employers in hospitals, universities, long-term care facilities and in Spitex as qualified experts. More than half of the previous graduates work in hospitals, for example in the role of an APN or quality development. Around a quarter work in teaching, training and research and just under a fifth work in long-term care institutions, Spitex or other service areas.
