Overview
This Civil Engineering for Mitigation of Risk from Natural Hazards MSc programme from University of Paviais is aimed at preparing professionals who know:
- assess the risk of systems and works (structures, infrastructures, territories, networks) exposed in particular to natural phenomena such as earthquakes or other meteoric or geological events that can cause damage, instability, loss of operability;
- design new works or interventions on existing works and systems that reduce the vulnerability and consequently mitigate the risk of exposed systems.
For this reason, the course aims to provide:
- an in-depth knowledge of the theoretical-scientific aspects and of the engineering-application approaches in the structural, hydraulic, geotechnical, seismic, hydrological and geological fields
- advanced skills for the exercise of the activity professional at a high level of qualification.
In particular, the training course will allow the student to acquire theoretical and experimental investigation tools (static, dynamic, kinematic measurements...) and innovative numerical-modeling tools (simulations of the studied phenomena with the use of deterministic and probabilistic mathematical models) for solving civil engineering problems in the presence of risks of natural origin, above all seismic and hydrogeological risks.
The skills developed will in any case be useful for operating in a broader context of types of risks (for example of anthropic origin or due to the operation of the works).
Career opportunities
This Master Course is designed to shape civil engineers with outstanding scientific and professional skills that are fully aware of the multi-faceted aspects of the seismic and hydrogeological risk. Graduates may find employment in engineering design and consulting offices, construction companies,agencies of civil protection, governmental institutions, regional authorities, management offices, international organizations, insurance and re-insurance companies, research institutions.
