Overview
Students gain analytical skills through qualitative, quantitative, and computational methods, with emphasis on functionalist theories, cognitive linguistics, sociolinguistics, and experimental approaches. The curriculum is strongly research-orientated, allowing students to design empirical studies, participate in ongoing research, and work on applied projects. Students explore topics ranging from language description and variation to computational modelling and language technology. Linguists contribute to the development of language technologies such as speech recognition, machine translation, and automatic text parsing.
The Linguistics at Aarhus University includes opportunities for internships and practical collaborations, preparing students for research or applied linguistic work. Learning takes place in a tight-knit academic community, supported by a vibrant student culture. Courses reflect the department's international research strengths, and students are encouraged to align projects with personal academic and career goals.

Programme Structure
Programme Structure:
The MA program builds toward a thesis project on a subject of the student’s own choosing.
The courses in the program prepare students to design experiments and do statistical analyses of the results, investigate the relationship between structure and meaning in language, explore the relationship between linguistic structure and the contextual constraints of usage, understand the diversity of means by which the world’s languages solve similar communicative problems, and use computational methods to investigate linguistic phenomena.
Students on the MA programme are involved in two research projects on exciting new topics and have the opportunity to explore the application of linguistics in the workplace through an internship.
All students are assigned a staff member as a mentor for the duration of their studies.
