Overview

This International Development certificate at Humber Polytechnic provides students with the skills and knowledge required to manage, develop and grow international development and disaster relief projects anywhere in the world. Graduates may find themselves in some of the most difficult environments in the world, or they may work in developed countries changing policies to make a difference in the Global South. Faculty are chosen for their field expertise and experience in international development – most continue to work with numerous international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) or United Nations agencies while teaching at Humber part time.

Agencies in Canada and abroad are in need of skilled individuals to write policy, advocate to developed nations’ governments and to manage programmes around the world. In addition, global disasters (such as Covid-19), conflict and climate change create an enormous need for humanitarian assistance and for the people who can deliver it.
The programme will prepare you for a variety of career paths. As most international development work is contract based, one can expect to have a variety of positions over a multi-year career. Some of our recent graduates have gone on to be:

administrator for the UN Peacekeeping mission to Democratic Republic of Congo
communications officer for World Vision Canada
founder of their own NGO
liaison to the US Mission at World Food Programme
logistics officer for food security related to Covid-19 in Toronto
programme manager for a major UK charity

Travel and International Experience - Practitioners are often required to work with individuals of different cultures and nationalities and/or travel to different countries.

Languages - The international nature of development works often requires languages other than English. Please describe any skills you have speaking, reading and/or writing languages other than English.

Full-time and Summer Employment - Describe recent full-time employment, if any, and summer activities for the past three summers, especially any experience with children, youth, the elderly or other vulnerable persons.
