Overview
About this Program
The DLTC also offers an MA with an option in literary writing (“literary creation” and “literary translation”) and an MA with an option in studies on women and gender. The DLTC grants funding to all its students, as well as research assistantships (and teaching expenses for PhD students). We are one of the only departments of literature in America to have signed an official agreement with the École Normale Supérieure in Paris thanks to which we offer a one-year internship to certain PhD students.
The French Language and Literature master's program offered by McGill University is both a complete program in itself and a first step towards PhD. It has two equally important goals:- Allow the student to complete and deepen their knowledge in the literary field through a teaching program on French and Quebec literatures as well as on a variety of related subjects: literary theory, history of language, history ideas, etc.
- Encourage the learning of research and the beginning of specialization on the part of the student who follows introductory seminars in literary research and either writes a dissertation or performs other research work under the direction of the professors of the Department.
The duration of master's studies is normally two years. In the case of the master's thesis, it includes two terms for schooling (MA I), followed by the writing of the thesis. In the case of the master without thesis, the schooling extends over three terms, followed by the writing of three works carried out within the framework of FREN 698 .
The Admissions Committee of the Department may grant exemptions from the regulations for enrollment in the Masters depending on the file of each student.
Part of the tuition (maximum of 6 credits) can be taken in another department of McGill which offers courses in the field of Humanities in the directory of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, or in another university, provided that the courses and seminars are at the same level as courses 600 or 700 offered by the Department. In all cases, the student must obtain the authorization of the Director of Graduate Studies and Research, which will only be granted if the courses in question are consistent with the candidate's study program.Programme Structure
