Overview
This hybrid Master’s track (online or on campus) combines developments from multiple disciplinary perspectives, including media studies, cultural and literary studies, sociology, and philosophy.
Central topics include the convergence of public and private spheres, intermediality and transmediality, participatory art and gaming practices, and new responsibilities for the Earth, as well as urgent media topics such as migration and sustainability. You will also research concrete digital-cultural practices within a broad, interdisciplinary social-theoretical framework, with a strong empirical focus.
You will reflect on questions like: How is democracy functioning in digital spaces? In what ways does digital surveillance reproduce structures of power? How do online platforms create new aesthetics and modes of critique?
Throughout the program, you develop strong communicative skills: writing, analyzing texts and images, interpreting cultural phenomena, and critically engaging with societal issues. You also learn to share academic insights with a wider audience through our own online platform connecting arts, digital culture, and globalization.
- This Master’s program offers an online education option, allowing students and professionals to expand their knowledge and skills entirely virtually using digital tools.
Career prospects
We prepare you to become a communication and culture professional, ready to navigate and shape digital, cultural, artistic, and societal developments. You will develop critical, analytical, and innovative skills in digital culture, combined with expertise in digital media and infrastructures, and a deep understanding of their impact on society. At the same time, you will build strong writing and online publishing skills.
Graduates are well equipped for careers in the cultural sector, journalism, communication, marketing, education, and research. They also pursue roles as digitalization experts, web editors, (social) media managers, and policy advisors.
Graduates work or start for example as:
- Project coordinator at a platform for visual arts and design
- Marketing and communications assistant at Libraries Unlimited South West
- Content creator at White Citadel
- Media coordinator at Universidad de Monterrey
