Overview
This is a two-year M.A. degree in philosophy, taught in English and offered by the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences at the University of Hradec Králové. It aims to prepare qualified specialists in the field of contemporary philosophy. Philosophy is not conceived as an isolated discipline but as a discipline in a dialogue with the findings of the social sciences (and some natural sciences), especially sociology, cultural and social anthropology, political science, cognitive science, etc. This program offers a systematic approach to philosophy, with a special focus on:
- Philosophy of Language
- Philosophy of Mind
- Political Philosophy
- Philosophical Anthropology
- Philosophy of the Natural Sciences
- Philosophy of the Social Sciences
Our department has particular strengths in the following areas: cognitive science and the philosophy of mind, philosophy of language and philosophical logic, metaphysics and the philosophy of science, philosophy of social sciences, theory of critical thinking and argumentation, ethics, and political philosophy. We focus on topical issues at the interface of philosophy and sciences with wider societal-political ramifications such as:
- What makes meaningful linguistic communication possible?
- How did human cognition/thought evolve, and how does it develop in ontogeny?
- What is culture and how does it shape thought?
- What is the nature of rationality?
- Why and how do ideologies work?
Upon successful completion, students will have a solid foundation for research in leading trends in the contemporary philosophy, and the best graduates will be prepared for admission to a Ph.D. degree.
