Historical archaeology is the study of artefacts and societies. Although archaeology is mainly focused on the past, archaeological methods are increasingly used to analyse contemporary societies.

Key features

The Historical Archaeology programme at the University of Iceland Unlike other historical archaeology programs, doesn't divide history into the medieval, post-medieval and contemporary but focus on the long-term;

The program traverses the medieval to modern, looking at continuities and discontinuities with a special emphasis on Northern Europe and the North Atlantic.

In your studies, you will learn how to investigate both written sources and material culture, understanding the ways they work together and in tension to produce a richer and deeper appreciation of our past.

Students applying for the MA need to have a BA or equivalent degree in archaeology, although exceptions will be considered. As the course is taught in English, students are also expected to have proficiency in reading and writing English.
