Overview

Global Cross-Media Cultures (Media Studies) programme of University of Amsterdam explores contemporary media culture from a critical perspective. The programme offers you the tools to understand and evaluate the ongoing transformation of media culture and its impact on culture, politics and everyday life. Taking television as a starting point, it maps out the conceptual, social and cultural challenges that come with digital, mobile and social media.

The Master's in Television and Cross-Media Culture prepares you for a broad range of career opportunities within the field of Media Studies.

The job market

Graduates of the Master's programme Television and Cross-Media Culture will have developed the skills to provide well-informed, well-founded and practical television criticism, both in terms of editing and programme development, and policy development and programme evaluation for closed-door and open forums. They frequently go on to become editors at broadcasting or production companies or work in different capacities in the field of journalism.

An academic career

Graduates can also go on to a PhD programme at the UvA, another Dutch university or a university abroad. When pursuing an academic career, it is advisable to discuss the possibility of joining a two-year Research Master's programme. If you are passionate about research and show exceptional promise in the first semester of your Master’s programme, you may apply to switch to the Research Master’s programme.

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in: Media and Culture; Media and Information; A discipline in the humanities or social sciences with a minimum of 60 ECTS (equivalent to two full-time semesters of academic studies) taken in courses related to media analysis, media practices, text and audience analysis or, more broadly speaking, the methodologies of cultural analysis

You are expected to have an awareness of basic methodological approaches in media studies or a closely related discipline
