Overview
This segment of tourism needs professionals who know how to present and offer cultural products in the best way so as to offer a better service to more and more tourists and thus help to strengthen the industry in this segment.
The study-units offer exposure to advanced research, innovation management techniques, cultural themes and their relation and application to tourism, a practicum and a dissertation.
You will learn about key texts, policy documents, white papers and other seminal documents prepared at national, regional or world level by organisations working in tourism and culture. These documents will serve as the basis on which you will build the subject knowledge required to meet the aims and objectives outlined in this degree programme.
The Tourism and Culture programme from University of Malta aims to:
- provide a unique opportunity to explore the richness of the Mediterranean region, its peoples, heritage and culture from a multi-perspective approach;
- create a solid academic set-up to deepen your understanding about the evolution of the Mediterranean mind-set, life, and structures;
- encourage you to build on your established interest in the Mediterranean by developing your sensitivity to different aspects of the cultural and heritage diversity of the region and beyond, and of their relevance of cultural and heritage issues to identity formation;
- provide you with personal and key skills, enabling you to develop as an independent and reflective individual that may later contribute towards the continuous improvement of heritage and cultural activities of the region and beyond;
- create the awareness that both heritage and culture are a segment of the tourism industry and the knowledge of how to integrate cultural aspects within the tourism product;
- equip you with the right skills (including extrapolation, evaluation, empathy, interpretation, sense of direction, organisation, planning, coordinating, etc.) that a modern, efficient tourism industry requires ֠people who know how to take the right and strategic action as required.
Careers
- The course will reinforce the knowledge, skills and methods if you are already operating in the sector, thus giving you an edge over your competitors. It also provides a base for career advancement, as the course puts you in an advantageous position with regard to the specialisation and knowledge base.
- Furthermore, if you wish to enter the cultural heritage and tourism sectors, you will have the right qualifications to be chosen or to set up your own enterprise.
- Further studies can lead to a Ph.D. with a specialisation in the areas being covered ֠such opportunities being offered by a large number of universities in the world, not least at the University of Malta.
