Overview
The MSc in Physics of the University of Basel successfully participates in cutting-edge research in important and fascinating fields of physics:
Nano and quantum physics
The revolutionary concepts of quantum physics and their consequences for the smallest to the largest things are researched here at the highest level, be it in super-semiconductors or semiconductors, magnets, graphs, topological systems or ultra-cold gases. New tools of nanophysics are used or developed to open the door to the quantum world. In this area, the fundamentals for key technologies of the future are researched and taught, ranging from quantum computing, quantum optics, and scanning probe microscopes to the life sciences.
The nanoscience in Basel is unique and a leader in Switzerland, also because of the close cooperation of the Department with the Swiss Nano Sciences Institute (SNI) - the national center of excellence in nanoscience and technology.
Cosmology and particle physics
What is the origin of the matter-antimatter asymmetry without which matter would not have arisen? What is the nature of "dark matter"? How did galaxies, stars and neutron stars come into being?
The cosmology and particle physics explores the subatomic building blocks of matter, its role in the development of the universe and in the formation of stars and supernova explosions.
- Industry Manufacturing industry (machine, watch, high-tech, electrical, chemical and optical industries, microtechnology, software)
- Research and development (industry and state / private research institutes)
- Teaching (high schools, universities)
- Medicine (e.g. medical physics),
- Communication, science journalism
- Public administration (examination, calibration and patent offices)
- the financial world (consulting, banking, insurance, risk assessment)
- Others (transport, energy and security specialists, personnel services)
Career opportunities
More than 2/3 of the graduates initially stay in higher education for a few years in order to obtain a doctorate. The job prospects are good; Due to the low number of students, this will remain the case for the foreseeable future. Many areas of activity are open to graduates of a physics degree, for example in:
Programme Structure
Courses included:- Astrophysics and cosmology
- Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics
- Condensed Matter Physics
- Nuclear and Particle Physics
- Physics beginner internship
- Postgraduate internship in physics

General requirements
- For admission into the Masters degree program, a Bachelors degree (usually, but not necessarily, in physics) from a recognized university or institution is required. For applicants holding a Bachelor's degree from other universities or for applicants holding a different degree that may be considered equivalent to a Bachelor's degree, the admissions committee of the Faculty of Natural Sciences will make a decision on a case by case basis.
