Overview
The curriculum features core courses, including ‘Theories in Linguistics,’ ‘Applied Linguistics,’ and ‘Issues in Syntax,’ which establish a solid foundation in the primary areas of linguistic study. In addition, elective courses and specialised topics such as Sociolinguistics, Psycholinguistics, and Discourse Analysis allow one to tailor one’s learning according to one’s specific research interests. A rigorous training in Research Methodology and practical applications of theory cultivates the skills necessary for conducting independent and impactful research. Accordingly, most scholars make a publishable contribution to the existing body of knowledge in the discipline through a research-based thesis in the second year of the degree, while the department also offers them the alternative of taking up elective courses specially designed to cover relatively advanced areas like language policy, bilingualism, and language assessment. The young linguists benefit from a dynamic learning environment replete with opportunities to attend seminars, workshops, and lectures delivered by distinguished linguists and experienced educators. The programme promotes critical thinking, analytical skills, and an interdisciplinary approach, encouraging active participation in conferences and other such research fora.
The Applied Linguistics program of The University of Lahore equips scholars with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to address language-related issues across diverse cultures and contexts.
