Overview
The Masters of Education in Curriculum Studies degree program from Makerere University runs for four semesters with theoretical, practical and research components. In the first year, instructional and theoretical courses are offered. In the second year, students undertake research that lead to the writing of a dissertation. The review has taken PART A of the structured graduate programmes followed by Makerere University
Programme Objectives
The Masters of Education in Curriculum Studies degree program courses offered in the Department of Curriculum, Teaching & Media are aimed at preparing students to demonstrate a theoretical and practical understanding of the issues underlying curriculum, teaching and media in the education systems in a global and local context at all levels of education, both in the non-formal and formal sectors.
The courses are intended to facilitate students’ interpretation and critique of the fundamental theoretical, political and structural underpinnings in educational institutional and students’ central role in its implementation and modification.
Specifically, the masters of education in curriculum studies courses enable students to:
- Discuss the essential foundations to curriculum and its change, and in view of this have them explore practical case studies in contemporary issues that justify curriculum innovations.
- Develop the theoretical and practical knowledge of designing, developing and implementing educational programs.
- Analyse the various theories and models of teaching and learning and their implications for teaching and learning in Uganda and elsewhere.
- Develop solutions to teaching and learning using various communication and instructional design systems.
- Evaluate and critique the centrality of curriculum evaluation to school and educational improvement; and translate it into practice as evaluators in the school system.
- Examine the trends in supervision in view of their implications to present innovations in supervision in Uganda and elsewhere.
