Overview
Features
As part of a cooperation with Bonn, students can also take courses in politics and economics. The North American Studies program at the University of Cologne consists of four advanced modules and one specialization module, all of which must be completed.
The courses are taught in English and aim at imparting knowledge and competence in the field of cultural studies, which serves as a common platform for affiliations with the research areas of the involved departments. These research areas include African-American history, gender studies, ecocriticism, American poetry and literature; especially postmodernist and speculative fiction, North American film history, as well as imperialism and (post-)colonialism.
With its focus on research, the program qualifies students for academic positions, but also prepares for work in the following fields: international relations, journalism, culture management, the publishing and library sector, public relations, advertising, tourism, international organizations, and education.
