Key Features

The Economics - Component in the Master of Education from Heidelberg University builds on students’ knowledge of economics, as gained in the preceding Bachelor’s degree programme, by equipping them with additional knowledge and skills in the subject and in specialised didactics.

Graduates of the programme are familiar with the economic models and concepts required to teach economics at secondary school level. Graduates are therefore able to recognise economic problems, behaviours and conflicts on a micro and macro level; they can provide systematic explanations for these, and are able to draw on appropriate models for analysis.

As well as gaining specific knowledge of economics, students benefit from interdisciplinary approaches to develop their understanding of selected neighbouring subjects, or gain practical experience in the field of economics.

Programme Structure

The standard period of study for the Master of Education for secondary level teaching (Gymnasium) is four semesters. The degree programme component in economics requires that students gain 31 credits. 13 of these credits are allocated for didactics specific to the teaching of economics (including didactic elements taught alongside the practical semester in a school). 18 credits are allocated for subject specific course components focussing on subject knowledge in economics. The so-called “blended module” is worth 10 credits. It combines subject specific knowledge with specialised didactics.
The course is interdisciplinary, meaning that students are able to develop their knowledge of neighbouring disciplines, or complete a placement in a field of economics where they witness the practical application of theoretical knowledge gained through study.

Proof of previous achievements in the Master's degree programme

Students applying for a transfer or change of institution from a non-German university must also submit: a certificate of transferable grades from the relevant subject area

Statement of sufficient financing for completion of the course of study. This does not apply for applications from EU/EEA member states and applicants with a German university entrance qualification.

Uncertified copy of the applicant’s passport (page with name in Latin script). Applicants from EU/EEA member states may alternatively submit a copy of their personal identity card.

For applicants with certificates from Vietnam, the People's Republic of China and India: Original of the APS certificate from the relevant Academic Examination Body.
