This Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture (Hirtshals Campus) Msc degree from Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is an interdisciplinary programme focused on the application of technical and natural sciences in the development of sustainable fisheries and aquaculture practices and technologies. utilization of the aquatic environment and its resources, and the development of sustainable aquaculture production.

Continued fisheries require careful management of stocks, as well as the development of advanced, selective, and sustainable fishing gears and practices. Aquaculture production represents an opportunity to increase supply of seafood, but growth of the industry requires technological advancement in production systems, water treatment technology, and feed manufacture.

Programme Structure

Courses include:

Programme specific courses cover a common curriculum in aquatic ecosystems, mathematical modelling, statistics, sustainability, and innovation.
Following this, you select courses according to your desired specialization. Fisheries related courses cover fisheries ecology and assessment, management of aquatic ecosystems, genetic methods in fisheries, fish capture methods, fish capture technology, evidence-based advice in fisheries, applied methods in fisheries technology, and recreational fishing.
Aquaculture courses include water quality in aquaculture, recirculating aquaculture systems, low trophic aquaculture, design and application of recirculating aquaculture systems, fish physiology and welfare, genetic methods in aquaculture, diseases and veterinary aspects, and nutrition and energetics of fish.

Candidates with other bachelor degrees (both Danish and foreign) are welcome to apply provided their BSc study contains the necessary prerequisite knowledge for MSc study.

Only applicants holding a relevant Bachelor of Science in Engineering, a Bachelor in Engineering (diplomingeniøruddannelse) or a Bachelor of Natural Science degree can be admitted to a Master of Science in Engineering programme. The bachelor's degree must be less than ten years old.
