Overview
The Aix-Marseille University's Master of History of Art courses are taught in a variety of disciplines. The courses are organised within each speciality of the Master's degree, and are spread over four consecutive semesters.
Each student enrolled in the Research Master's programme prepares a Master 1 and then a Master 2 thesis under the supervision of a teacher-researcher in the department. Depending on the research theme, another specialist may be involved in supervising the thesis. At the end of the academic year, the candidates defend their M1 and M2 dissertations before a jury.
Career
The research master's degree is a full-fledged diploma, allowing one to envisage in the best conditions the careers opened by the Ministry of Culture or National Education. It also prepares students for enrolment in a doctorate in art history, with a view to university or CNRS studies. Insofar as the subject of the thesis coincides with the research areas of the TELEMME laboratory, Master 2 graduates may consider applying for doctoral grants provided by the doctoral school ED 355 (Espaces Cultures Sociés). The competitions for research fellowships at the Institut National d'Histoire de l'Art (INHA) are also open to Master 2 students.
The jobs of the professional Master's degree are in connection with local and territorial authorities. They mainly concern technical and administrative positions (heritage department), but also with associations, architectural firms, design offices and structures carrying out their activities within a historic monument or the ancient building.
This training offers, moreover, a wide range of possibilities for the development of a professional career.
This training also offers the possibility of taking some of the tests for the A and B category civil service competitions (territorial heritage conservation attaché, territorial heritage curator, territorial heritage conservation assistant)
