Why study the Film and Photographic Studies MA programme at Leiden University?
Designed for students with an undergraduate degree in a related field or relevant professional experience, this programme offers excellent preparation for a career in cinema, photography or media art.
At the Leiden University Library you can access one of the oldest photo collections in the Netherlands. During the programme you will also learn from acclaimed scholars at Leiden University's Humanities department, as well as artists, critics, and curators.
An exciting range of learning methodologies include lectures, workshops, seminars, field trips and internships. Our students have done internships in organisations including New York's International Center of Photography and London's Victoria & Albert Museum.

General requirements
- A bachelor’s degree from a Dutch research university (in the specialisation) in Film and Literary Studies: Film Studies; Art History, Culture Studies, Visual Anthropology or Media Studies (especially film or photography).
- Holders of a comparable bachelor’s degree from a research university, equivalent to the level of a Dutch academic Bachelor’s degree, or who can demonstrate that they meet the requirements for such a degree, may also be granted admission.
- Completed the pre-master's / bridging programme.
- You should have knowledge of and insight into analysis of film, photography and/or video comparable with those acquired upon completing one of the bachelor's programmes referred to above.
