Increasingly, the general public wants to be and needs to be informed about scientific topics. At the same time, scientists need to show accountability to the general public about their research. In this specialisation you bridge the gap between experts and the public by combining high quality research in computer science with extensive training in science communication.
After completion you have obtained the necessary knowledge and skills to either become science communicator with a strong background in computer science, or a scientist with a communicating mindset.

Why study the Computer Science and Science Communication and Society MSc programme at Leiden University?
- The specialisation provides you with at least one full year of research training in Computer Science, followed by a year of courses, internships and research in the field om science communication.
- You have ample of opportunities to assemble your own study path: an individually tailored programme will be designed for each student.
- You will get hands-on experience during a science communication research or practical internship within a relevant organisation, such as popular science magazines, science museums, radio or television.
Programme Structure
The entire MSc programme in combination with the Science Communication and Society specialisation consists of two components:
- Computer Science component (60 – 80 EC)
- Science Communication and Society component (40 – 60 EC)
Preferably, you follow the Computer Science component during the first year of the programme and the Science Communication and Society component during the second year.

General requirements
- If you have a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Artificial Intelligence, or in a Computer Science-related programme from a foreign research university with a level similar to Dutch universities, you are eligible to apply under the condition that you have accumulated at least 90 EC (or the equivalent thereof) in courses/projects in the domain of Computer Science.
