Overview
The Obesity, Endocrinology and Metabolism M.Phil course from the University of Cambridge offers a number of exciting opportunities for A-level Biology and undergraduate students to discover academic research in a world-class environment.
This taught MPhil comprises three major elements:
- taught material delivered by local researchers who are internationally recognised experts in the field
- biostatistics training, and
- a 32-week research project in a world-leading laboratory.
Lecture topics will cover the causes of obesity, the neurobiology of appetite control and energy balance, disorders of metabolism and body weight regulation (e.g. type 2 diabetes), and state-of-the-art techniques to study obesity and metabolism.

Applicants for this course should have achieved a UK Good II.i Honours Degree.
If your degree is not from the UK, please check International Qualifications to find the equivalent in your country.
For this programme, you should already have, or expect to obtain, at least an upper second class honours or equivalent in a subject relevant to the programme (i.e. including Biosciences, Biomedical science, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Neuroscience, Physiology, Medicine). Applicants from outside these disciplines would be expected to clearly address their motivation to take the course and describe how they have, or plan to, raise their subject knowledge in basic biology/biomedical science.
