Overview
We are looking for applicants with a strong background in chemistry who want to become experts in chemistry of circular economy. The programme Chemistry and Analytics for Circular Economy offered by the University of Jyväskylä provides you with solid theoretical background on chemistry related to recovery, reuse, and upcycling of valuable raw materials as well as hands-on experience in organic and inorganic analytics.
With the growth in circular economy, forest and chemical industries, the expectation of graduates from CACE to find employment in their own field of expertise in Finland or Europe will be guaranteed for years to come. For example, due to the critical raw materials act published by the European Commission previously unseen work opportunities are opening up for graduates in this programme.
The students of CACE gain hands-on skills that are highly valued by potential employers, for example in chemical and forest industries, which develop solutions for circular economy in transition towards a zero-waste future.

The alumni of CACE will meet the needs of experts in the growing fields of circular economy, forest and chemical industries to ensure the recovery, availability, and supply of materials needed by modern society. The expectation of graduates from CACE to find employment in their own field of expertise is high.
In addition to strong theoretical and practical chemistry skills required for circular economy, this programme will support you in developing your business, leadership and working life skills that include, for example time management, communication skills and social skills. This allows employment in private or public sectors as well as in academic research.
Programme Structure
Curriculum:
- CACE combines the basics of circular economy as well as the recovery and upcycling of both metals and bio-based materials in its course curriculum, with a strong focus on analytical chemistry.
- Major subject is chemistry with a minimum of 75 ECTS, and you can choose optional studies for example from business, leadership, marketing, statistics, planetary wellbeing, information seeking, career planning, communications and language studies to fulfill 120 ECTS.
- Teaching includes practical hands-on training with instrumental analysis.

General requirements
- The higher education degree must provide eligibility for master’s level study in the country in which the degree was issued. Applicants holding a degree that gives eligibility for doctoral-level study should primarily seek admission to a doctoral programme.
- Suitable fields of the degree include:
- chemistry
- related natural sciences
- Eligible studies must include minimum 25 ECTS of courses in chemistry and 5 ECTS of practical laboratory work in chemistry, 30 ECTS in total. Separate higher education studies that are not part of a degree may also be considered during the evaluation.
- The higher education institution awarding the degree must be an officially recognised part of the national education system, i.e., listed as a degree-granting higher education institution by the country where it is located or by a relevant international organisation (such as UNESCO).
