Overview

The MA in History at Swansea University is designed to immerse students in a diverse array of historical themes, covering periods from the Middle Ages through to the late 20th century. This programme is particularly suited for those interested in the early modern period (c. 1500-c. 1800) and the modern era (c. 1800-present). Students will engage with critical themes such as the evolution of modernity, including urbanisation, capitalism, bureaucracy, and advancements in science and technology.

Syllabus

The programme structure comprises six 20-credit modules in the first part, which includes both compulsory and optional modules. Compulsory modules encompass various approaches to early modern and modern history, introducing students to different research methodologies. Optional modules allow students to tailor their studies to their interests, covering themes such as modern Welsh history and the histories of social movements.

In the second part of the course, students will undertake a 60-credit dissertation project on a topic of their choice, developed in collaboration with their supervisor. This dissertation allows students to conduct in-depth research and showcase their findings.
