Overview
The Biological Sciences (Infection Biology and Molecular Immunology) course from University of Cambridge will draw upon the breadth and international strengths in infection biology and molecular immunology.notably, the Departments of Biochemistry, Clinical Neuroscience, Genetics, Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Pathology, Physiology Development and Neuroscience, Plant Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, Zoology, the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research and the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology.
The MPhil is offered by the Faculty of Biology as a full-time period of study and research and introduces students to research skills and specialist knowledge in Infection Biology and Molecular Immunology.
By the end of the course, students will be able to demonstrate:
- advanced knowledge and understanding of the biological and biomedical sciences relevant to the study of their specialisation;
- in-depth knowledge of an aspect of their specialisation;
- a broad understanding of modern research techniques and thorough knowledge of the literature, applicable to their research topic;
- knowledge of the theoretical approaches relevant to their specialisation and training in critical thinking in the area;
- expertise in research methods and analysis of research data;
- originality in the application of knowledge, together with the practical understanding of how research and enquiry are used to create and interpret knowledge in the field.
Programme Structure
Curriculum:
- MPhil students meet regularly as a cohort for taught components. Core Topics in Infection Biology and Molecular Immunology comprise up to 60 hours of interactive, seminar-based teaching including detailed exploration into some cutting-edge experimental approaches that are instrumental to advancing the field.
- Additionally, training is provided in key professional research and transferrable skills, such as time and data management, laboratory record keeping, research ethics and integrity, scientific communication skills and academic writing, and data analysis skills including statistics.
- All students will be members of the University's Postgraduate School of Life Sciences (PSLS) which offers a wide variety of core skills and professional development training. Visit the Researcher Development page on the PSLS website for more information.
