Overview

The Film and Screen Studies course from the University of Cambridge students are immersed in a research environment that emphasises work on geopolitics, early cinema, art cinema and the avant-garde, theory, aesthetics, and gender and sexuality.

The moving image is explored in relation to the development of modern and contemporary culture, and to the history and theory of other media (literature, music, the visual arts, architecture, the digital).

The University of Cambridge MPhil in Film and Screen Studies is offered by the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics (MMLL) as a nine-month full-time period of research and introduces students to research skills and specialist knowledge.

By the end of the programme students will have:

developed a deeper knowledge of the history and theory of film and screen studies in a cultural context;
developed a conceptual understanding of the debates which have shaped that field of study, and of current research methods;
acquired or consolidated skills appropriate for research in their chosen area;
demonstrated independent judgement, based on their own research;
participated effectively in seminar discussions; and
learnt how to timetable independent research to produce written work of a high standard to a clearly defined deadline.

Programme Structure

Curriculum:

During the first term of study, students attend weekly seminars and film screenings designed to give them a broad insight into moving image theory and culture.
Students can choose from a range of module options. Some focus on the moving image, others are shared with different MPhils (e.g. European, Latin American and Comparative Literatures and Cultures) and other Faculties/Centres within the University, such as English and Latin American Studies, among others. The list of modules can change from year to year depending on the availability of academic staff.
During the Lent term, students attend weekly group seminars led by the module convenor, lasting 1.5 to two hours per week per module. Two essays are submitted at the end of the Lent term.

Applicants for this course should have achieved a UK High II.i Honours Degree.
Applicants with degrees in film or media studies and related disciplines are encouraged to apply, as are students with backgrounds in literary studies, art history and other areas. We do not assume experience in film and media studies, however, the degree is not designed as an introduction to the discipline.
