The Master of Arts (by Research) is University of Malaya’s premier research training degree. The M. A. is awarded based on the foundation of the thesis prepared under supervision, resulting in an original and significant contribution, displaying extensive knowledge and comprehension of the subject and field of study.

- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in the related field with minimum CGPA of 3.00 or its equivalent or;
- Bachelor's Degree with CGPA between 2.70 to 2.99 and fulfil at least one (1) criterion as follows:
- Universiti Malaya graduate;
- Has at least one (1) year of working experience in a related fields;
- Has produced publications in the related fields;
- Scholarship agency staff;
- Pass the interview conducted by the Faculty; or
- Pass the special assessment by the Faculty
