Theoretical and Applied Linguistics delivered by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki will:

Key facts
All specialisations are three semesters in length on a full-time basis only. The specialisation “Linguistics” is offered exclusively via distance learning (100% synchronously online), while the other two specialisations are offered exclusively in person. This year (2025-26), we are running the MA in “Foreign Language Learning and Teaching”. For the next academic year (2026-27), we will be accepting applications for the fully online MA in “Linguistics”. Applications are open between 23 January - 6 April 2026.

Credits
Each semester of studies corresponds to 30 ECTS. Compulsory courses and elective courses are credited with 10 ECTS each, while the MA thesis or Portfolio is equivalent to 30 ECTS.

General requirements
- Copy of First Cycle (B.A.) Degree or Certificate of Completion of studies or current transcript of grades for candidates who are to graduate before the completion of the selection and evaluation process for the MA Programme.
- Transcript listing all courses and grades (with final average grade).
- Personal statement briefly outlining the applicant’s academic background, knowledge, skills, abilities and the reasons for applying for the specific MA Programme.
- In the case of graduates of Schools other than the School of English, Certificate of English language proficiency at level C1 at least, according to the system of the Council of Europe, recognised by A.S.E.P. as proof of English language attainment. Alternatively, a copy of Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from a Greek University or an equivalent foreign University may be submitted, demonstrating the successful completion of an English-language undergraduate or postgraduate programme.

The payment of the tuition fee is made in six instalments.

The living costs include the total expenses per month, covering accommodation, public transportation, utilities (electricity, internet), books and groceries.
Funding
According to legislation, a percentage of registered students who are Greek citizens are eligible for exemption from tuition fees based on income criteria,
On an annual basis, the School may award up to five scholarships to registered students. Eligibility criteria are academic (such as academic performance based on your average grade of the previous semester), provided that a student has not already been granted a tuition fee exemption or scholarship from another institution.
In some cases, scholarships are compensatory, i.e. they require you to take on some work by participating in educational and/or research activities/units of the School.
