Overview
The MSc Climate, Energy and Humanitarian Action (distance learning) degree offered by Loughborough University is situated within the world-leading Department of Geography & Environment. It has been co-developed with and co-taught by the United Nations Institute for Research and Training, a world-renowned institute working with sustainable development and humanitarian action practitioners.
The Department of Geography & Environment is one of the most highly rated Geography departments in the UK for research impact and home to the world leading Loughborough Centre for Sustainable Transitions: Energy, Environment and Resilience (STEER) - Accelerating sustainable development for all.
The degree focuses on equipping students with high level skills, knowledge and attributes and you will be taught by expert practitioners from the sustainable development, energy and humanitarian field alongside internationally recognised researchers.
Alongside advanced subject knowledge, the programme develops competencies in industry standards models and software for geographical information systems, modelling climate change and modelling sustainable development. A collaborative and co-productive approach to learning is taken, and you will be expected to address real-world questions through individual research and analysis, group work and problem-based learning.

- Sustainable Development: Roles such as sustainability officers, policy advisors, or project managers in governmental and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), working towards sustainable transitions.
- Energy Sector: Careers in renewable energy development, energy policy analysis, or environmental impact assessment to support sustainable energy transitions.
- Humanitarian Action: Positions such as humanitarian response coordinators or disaster risk reduction specialists, applying knowledge of sustainable development in crisis contexts.
- Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation: Roles including climate change analysts, resilience planners, or consultants advising on climate action strategies.
- Geospatial and Environmental Analysis: Positions involving geographic information systems (GIS) expertise or environmental modelling, supporting decision-making on climate and sustainability issues.
- Working for government organisations and international non-governmental organisations (e.g., United Nations, World Health Organisation, World Bank).
