Overview
Energy transition refers to the global shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, facilitating a broader transition toward a carbon-free economy by mid-century. This process is supported by a collective international commitment to limit global warming to below 2°C in accordance with the Paris Agreement and nationally determined contributions (NDCs).
Key Facts
The global transformation anticipated during the transition period will require changes in extractive industries and create new risks and opportunities for resource-dependent countries. As global fossil fuel consumption declines, countries reliant on revenues from oil and coal industries will face challenges related to declining sectoral income. For mining and energy companies, the increased use of renewables and clean technologies will drive demand for critical minerals such as cobalt, lithium, and copper, potentially leading to increased investment in these sectors.
The Energy Transition programme is offered at Kazakh-British Technical University.
Programme Structure
Courses include:
- To analyze current trends and the state of the energy sector in Kazakhstan and globally in order to identify key challenges and opportunities for development.
- To formulate possible approaches and strategies for achieving sustainable development goals, considering global and national contexts.
- To solve applied engineering problems and design mechanical systems based on renewable energy sources, focusing on efficiency and sustainability.
- To classify modern approaches and technological solutions aimed at achieving carbon neutrality, using advanced methods.
