Overview
This taught Biomedical Engineering MSc at University of Glasgow offers a wide exposure to the philosophy and practice of biomedical engineering whilst simultaneously enabling students to deepen their knowledge of specific areas of biomedical engineering disciplines, which have been chosen on the basis of the research strengths of the discipline. The choice includes Biomaterials and Biomechanics including their application in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, Rehabilitation Engineering applied within Glasgow hospitals, and bioelectronics and diagnostic systems designed to be applied from advanced hospitals to out-in-the-field situations.
The compulsory part of the programme provides the basic underlying knowledge needed throughout biomedical engineering. These core courses are taken in both semesters to allow a wide range of optional subjects to be available.
The school has an Athena Swan Silver Award, demonstrating the school’s commitment to supporting women in scientific studies and careers, and to improving the working environment for all.
Career prospects
Career opportunities include positions in rehabilitation engineering, biomaterials for reconstructive surgery, biosensors, device and implant design and development, and biosignal processing. Recent graduates have gone on to work for Pfize, the NHS, Cactus Communications, Neuranics and Cap Gemini UK plc.

General requirements
- 2.1 Hons (or non-UK equivalent) in any Engineering discipline, Computing Science or Physical Sciences/Mathematics degree that includes the core modules, with modules in Engineering Maths and/or Maths at an average grade of pass.
- We may also accept degrees in Biology, Medicine, or Life Science that include significant Mathematics or Engineering Mathematics modules.
- We exceptionally accept degrees at 2.2 Hons (or non-UK equivalent) with an average grade of 2.1 in accepted modules. Extensive work experience may be considered in addition to academic content for those that fall just below the degree requirements listed above.
- Tests must have been taken within 2 years 5 months of programme start date
