A home to creative writers for more than ten years, the Creative Writing in English MFA at The University of Hong Kong offers uniquely designed workshops and intensive seminars.
A customized balance of coursework and supervision provides professional feedback and advanced practices toward completing an original Creative Thesis, ready for circulation and potential publication.
What you'll learn
The MFA at HKU offers the gold standard in the field, including a special focus on creative contexts of the multilingual writer. At HKU, we welcome creative writers from Hong Kong and overseas. The programme offers one year of intensive and dedicated study among fellow writers at the HKU Black Box Studio and at The HKU GUILD <www.hkuguild.com>, a home for creative writers, research and the arts in Hong Kong. Students along with fellow writers and artists, join together and forge a life-long community.
Writers may apply with samples from a work-in-progress or an intended project, such as an excerpt from a memoir, novel, short fiction, play, screenplay, or poetry.

General requirements
- A good bachelor's degree from a recognised university, or equivalent qualifications, and a sample of Creative Writing in English.
- Applicants majoring in the following fields are encouraged, while all fields are welcomed: literature, language and communication studies; journalism; drama; media and cultural studies; music; fine arts; and law.
- Applicants are required to submit a sample of original Creative Writing in English for evaluation. The creative sample may include, for example, a short story, a chapter from a novel, a selection of poems, scenes from a play, or excerpts from a memoir or another type of creative nonfiction. The sample is expected to have 12-15 pages, printed on one side of A4 paper. Finalists will be asked to interview as part of the selection process.
