Overview
The General Surgery programme offered by the University of Nairobi provides cognitive, technical, communication, research professionalism and leadership skills required to excel as a surgeon.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this programme, the students should be able to
- Comprehend the scientific basis of surgical diseases and their manifestation
- Apply the scientific knowledge in the perioperative care of patient with alimentary tract, breast and endocrine surgery patient
- Able to take responsibility for emergency surgical conditions and deal independently with life-threatening situations due to trauma and critical illness.
- Knowledgeable, skilful, ethical and compassionate with a sound orientation towards the community and an interest in research.
- Have essential capability in taking care of orthopaedic surgery, paediatric surgery, urologic surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery and neurosurgery.
Career
Graduands end up in successful employment in private sector, public sector or academia. The programme can also lead to sub-specialization training in any of the General Surgery sub-specialties.

General requirements
- The Common Regulations for the Master of Medicine Degree in the University shall apply.
- The candidates eligible for admission into the program shall fulfil the following conditions;
- Hold a minimum of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB)
- degree of the University of Nairobi or any equivalent qualification from an institution recognized by Senate.
- Degree should be registrable by the Medical Practitioner’s and Dentists Board of Kenya for purposes of training and candidates must produce evidence of registration with the same board at commencement of training.
- Trainees will be required to have an insurance cover.
