History
The University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn (UWM) was founded on 1 September 1999. The establishment resulted from merging three institutions of higher education in Olsztyn, i.e. the Academy of Agriculture and Technology, the Higher School of Pedagogy, and Warmian Theological Institute.
Education
At first, in 1999, there were 12 faculties, 32 branches of study, and 24.500 students at UWM. The University also had a right to grant doctoral degrees in 13 scientific disciplines, and postdoctoral degrees in 6 branches. According to the University’s Act of Establishment, the position of the first Rector of UWM was taken by Prof. Ryszard Górecki, PhD.
Research
Research activities carried out at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn comprise: statutory activities of scientific bodies, including activities that enhance the development of young scientists and doctoral candidates, funded by the internal competitive procedure; basic research and other assignments funded by the National Science Centre.
Career
The mission of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn is to carry out diverse activities with the aim of educating highly qualified graduates and scientific staff, to carry out scientific research responding to the needs of the region’s economy and to enrich the national culture.

A move from youth to adult
My University gave me a chance to develop my interest in engineering. Lectures are always to help us and it is very satisfying to learn new things and seeing the commitment from them. They offer developmental subjects like maths, mechatronics, elektortechnics. When I have come to the UWM I didn't know anybody, but the atmosphere allowed to feel good and make new friendships. One thing to develop is time schedule. Sometimes there is too much time between classes. We have a lot of practise on our univeristy. Every year we have to serve apprenticeship for 6 weeks. I was studying on another university and mine is much more open to people.

Plus minus the university tuition
All in all the training for me is not bad. It is quite pleasant and the assignments only from some subjects did not make me excited. It is very nice that there are several types of training such as full-time, part-time as well as individual. It is a pity that there is no distance learning in my specialty, but individual training is very similar to distance learning.

Housing services
In Kortowo, you can choose one of ten dormitories. They come with single, double and triple rooms, furnished, with private bathrooms, refrigerators and Internet access. Each dorm includes a shared kitchen, a laundry room and a TV room. We increase the standard of the dorms each year, so some of them even include a gym and a sports hall. Room price ranges from PLN 290 to 420 per month.
Library services
The University Library in Olsztyn is a UWM organisational unit carrying out educational, service and scientific tasks. It also functions as a public science library available to residents of the region and the whole country. The Library is an educational centre of the University and an active culture-creating entity that is friendly to its users.
Campus life
The University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn is situated in a picturesque part of city - Kortowo campus, the unquestionable pride of the University. Learning, leisure and recreation - all these needs are satisfied at the campus. Kortowo occupies an area of 230 hectares and is surrounded by forest and 4 lakes, the biggest one - Kortowskie Lake creates great conditions for leisure activities.
Student clubs
In the campus there are 188 scientific societies and student organizations, university radio station (Radio UWM FM), television (TV Kortowo) and magazines, the Kortowo Folklore Song and Dance Troupe, the Chior of the UWM, famous volleyball team AZS UWM and many others. All this constitutes a great social and cultural environment to interact and to acquire experience by meeting people from various fields of knowledge and from different countries.
