History
Established in 1958, the second of its kind, IIT Bombay was the first to be set up with foreign assistance. The funds from UNESCO came as Roubles from the then Soviet Union. In 1961 Parliament decreed the IITs as ‘Institutes of National Importance'. Since then, IITB has grown from strength to strength to emerge as one of the top technical universities in the world.
Education
The institute is recognised worldwide as a leader in the field of engineering education and research. Reputed for the outstanding calibre of students graduating from its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, the institute attracts the best students from the country for its bachelor's, master's and doctoral programmes.
Research
IIT Bombay has made concerted efforts to align its R&D focus with the national goal of achieving technological self-reliance. Students and faculty conduct research projects in thrust areas of science and engineering. The institute has ongoing academic and research collaborations with many national and international universities, governments and industries in order to keep pace with expanding frontiers of knowledge and global developments; it is also constantly in touch with national needs. Its pre-eminent position at the cutting-edge of research is reflected in its impressive list of research projects, which cater to both our national needs and global developments.
Career
The members of the faculty of IIT Bombay are engaged in a wide range of activities besides substantial academic and research commitments. They contribute significantly to the country's growth in science and technology by making their services available to various national and state level committees. A highly motivated staff support the institute's general administration, teaching and research. IITB provides a reasonably flat organisational environment and work culture for both its faculty and staff.

A Holistic Learning Experience at IIT Kharagpur

- Some of the faculty is extraordinary and very encouraging, but quite a lot are not up to the mark - There is definitely considerable amount of academic workload but the courses are engaging eventually the effort put is rewarding when solving non-trivial practical questions in final exams

Student services
The IIT Bombay campus provides an ideal setting for students to participate in recreational and extracurricular activities. IITB's a core program involving co-curricular activities for UG students in their first year is meant to provide them a launching pad for these activities. The mandate of the Student Affairs Office is to coordinate and regulate all aspects of student life at IITB. This is carried out primarily through two bodies:
- The Hostels Coordinating Unit ( HCU )
- The Students Gymkhana, which has a group of highly qualified sports officers and other instructors to run all the activities. The Gymkhana also forms the hub for the cultural activities of the students.
Housing services
IIT Bombay is a small township in itself. Rich in natural flora and fauna to begin with, the campus' green cover has been maintained and even increased over the years. An island of green in the otherwise concrete jungle that is Mumbai, the campus at Powai nestles among hills and is flanked by the Powai and Vihar lakes.
Library services
IIT Bombay’s Central Library is like IIT Bombay – user-focused, innovative, and excellence driven. Central Library manages knowledge, both in print and digital formats, ensures seamless discovery and access to these scholarly resources, and provides faculty, students, and staff with professional support to find, evaluate, manage, and use such resources.
Campus life
Located in Powai, one of the northern suburbs of Mumbai, the residents of the institute reap the advantage of being in the busy financial capital of India, while at the same time enjoying the serenity of a campus known for its natural beauty. A fully residential institute, all its students are accommodated in its 15 hostels with in-house dining; the campus also provides excellent amenities for sports and other recreational facilities.
