History
Hamburg University of Applied Sciences was founded in 1970 as the Fachhochschule Hamburg but it looks back on a long tradition, with roots going back to the 18th century. Four engineering schools and six vocational schools were brought together with the goal to develop a new form of higher education.
Education
HAW Hamburg - the practice-oriented university offers versatile, reformed study programs with a sound education on a scientific or artistic basis. Lecturers who know from their own professional experience what you need later in your professional field.
Research
Our research is practical. Many projects are carried out in close cooperation with business and society, primarily in the Hamburg area. The donors include the European Union, federal ministries, supraregional research funding institutions, foundations, industry-related funding associations, companies and Hamburg authorities.
Career
At the transition from university to professional life, we support you in your professional orientation and development, in the development of your (over) professional skills, in the application process as well as on your way to independence or your thoughts on it.

I didn’t know much about university stress
At first I thought university was fun until I entered. I then got to know that it wasn’t easy. It’s very difficult and needs much effort before you can excel.

I worked as a house officer in combined military hospital and now working as a medical officer
Decent uni but IT hack was a serious issue
Overall, it's a good university. However, the IT hack was a very difficult time for everyone, and the university didn't handle the situation particularly well. The teaching faculty were generally kind, but there's definitely room for improvement. In the Public Health department, there was a noticeable lack of English-speaking professors. Some classes were led by inexperienced instructors, and a few were held online because the university couldn't bring the lecturers on-site.

Student services
Your chip card at the HAW Hamburg is a multi-purpose electronic matriculation card. The front of the card is your student ID card and semester ticket. It is valid for the duration of your degree programme at HAW Hamburg. All you need to do is validate the card at the start of each semester. The chip card can be extended for another semester once you have successfully re-registered.
Housing services
Finding accommodation in Hamburg is difficult. We therefore recommend that you start looking for a place to live in good time. If you have friends or relatives in Hamburg ask them to help.
Most of the halls of residence in Hamburg are run by the Studierendenwerk Hamburg and offer affordable accommodation for students. Generally, students have their own room in an apartment which they share with other students - bathroom and kitchen are shared. The monthly rent for a room in hall starts at roughly 220 Euro [including heating, water and electricity].
Library services
In our five libraries you have access to more than 200,000 print and electronic media. We support your research with our many professional sources of information. We offer a place for learning for your study. Read and learn - learn and study with us!
Campus life
HAW Hamburg is a city university and not a typical "campus university". Our university is split up over four locations throughout the city. We hope however, that wherever you study, you will feel at home.
Campus Berliner Tor is our main campus and home to the Faculty of Engineering & Computer Science and the Faculty of Business & Social Sciences. The faculties have their own libraries, labs and computer rooms on this site. The campus has a cafeteria and different cafés as well as a hall of residence directly on campus and another one a seven-minute walk away.
Sports facilities
Sport and fitness are an excellent way of keeping your head free of study stress. As a HAW Hamburg student you can participate in the university sports programme or use the fitness centre at Berliner Tor.

We believe we are an interesting university with a lot to offer students who want to get a degree in Germany. Accreditation
The university has been institutionally accredited by the Science Council since July 2009. The original reaccreditation has since been extended from 5 to 10 years (until 2025), which validates our high-quality standards in teaching and research.
