The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was established in 1936 as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. In 1944, it was renamed as the Tata Institute of Social Sciences.

History

The year 1964 was an important landmark in the history of the Institute, when it was declared Deemed to be a University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act (UGC), 1956.

Education

In pursuance of its vision and guiding principles, the Tata Institute of Social Sciences organises teaching programmes to facilitate the development of competent and committed professionals for practice, research and teaching; undertakes research; develops and disseminates knowledge; and reaches out to the larger community through extension, at the local, national, regional and international levels.

Research

Over the years, through its research in social work, social sciences, human resources management, health systems and allied fields, the TISS has made consistent contributions to civil society and the development sector and helped shape planning, policy and programme formulation, foster critical rethinking and development of people-centred interventions. The role of academic institutions like TISS in conducting pioneering research and extension activities rooted in the context of societal realities, and aimed at influencing policy and practice for positive social change, is widely acknowledged.

Great College, great curriculum, great professors

It is the leading university for social sciences in India. It has been very effective in living up to the standard even in the pandemic times and has been efficient in imparting quality education to kids from diverse socio- economic spectrum .

Learning through cultures.

My university provided me with an opportunity to to study amongst various individuals belonging from various different cultures from India. Because of the diversity of students at Whistling Woods International, affiliated to Tata institute of social sciences, helped improve the quality of study with enhanced opinions from people of various cultures.

Student services

The Office of Students' Affairs (OSA) was established in 2006. During the 12 years of its existence, the OSA has consolidated its activities by streamlining various processes like financial aid disbursement, medical insurance, orientation for junior students and other student support mechanisms. The issues and activities of the OSA have increased considerably with the expansion of teaching and research programs in Mumbai and other campuses. The office liaises with the Tuljapur, Hyderabad and Guwahati off- campus of the Institute and has regular interactions with authorities to facilitate provision of similar support services as that of Mumbai Campus.

Library services

The effort to establish a well-equipped library at TISS, Hyderabad has already begun. More than 4000 books are available and many more books are being procured. The availability of the books is linked to the teaching programmes that the Institute is introducing. 

ICT services

The computer center performs a wide range of functions like Network Management, Server Management, Software development, Technical support/ Training to staff, faculty and students, System Maintenance. The Institute has an inhouse data center which hosts all it's servers. All critical software applications are developed, hosted and maintained inhouse. 

Medical services

Campus doctor facility is available for students on designated days and timing for students across both the campuses. However in emergency students are referred to nearby hospitals and are assisted by TISS staff.

Campus life

TISS Tuljapur in the Osmanabad district of Maharashtra was set up with support from the Government of Maharashtra in 1986. It is a 100-acre campus on a vast plateau on the outskirts of the temple town of Tuljapur. The tuljapur campus has commenced offering the Five Year Integrated Masters programme since 2012 and also offers MA in Rural Development. It has a full-fledged computer centre, library, gymnasium, boys hostel, girls hostels, guest-house, faculty and staff quarters.

Sports facilities

The TISS Tuljapur Campus is fully equipped with along with the infrastructure for several out-door sports like football, basketball, cricket, badminton, volleyball, kho-kho, etc. Indoor games like table-tennis, Carom, Chess are also available for the students. All Sports and Gym activities are conducted under the guidance and supervision of a qualified and experienced Physical Instructor appointed at Tuljapur TISS Campus. There is a three storey Gymkhana Building in Tuljapur Campus. The Gym is located on the ground floor of the Gymkhana Building and is well equipped with all the latest equipments.
