History
Teachers College started in 1880 when philanthropist, Grace Dodge, created a school in Greenwich Village to teach sewing, cooking, and other practical arts to underserved immigrant women. Through her work, Dodge had realized that a new kind of pedagogy was in order—teaching that reflected an understanding of learners’ backgrounds and of how to present material in relevant, meaningful ways.

Flexible Studio Practice at Teachers College
I have really enjoyed the hybrid Studio Practice for Art Educators program at Teachers College, Columbia University. The small cohort size creates a supportive and engaged learning environment, and the classes strike a strong balance between advanced studio practice and coursework in art, visual culture, and other relevant subjects. This combination has been especially valuable in strengthening both my practice and my critical thinking. The program structure is also very flexible. I appreciated the two required summer sessions, and within my cohort there are students enrolled part time who complete three summer sessions instead, which allows the program to accommodate different professional and personal needs. Overall, it is a thoughtfully designed program with excellent faculty and a strong sense of community.
Review
It's a smaller campus, and very easy to walk around! If you attended a small town high school, and are nervous to go to a larger university or college, Columbia College is perfect! The campus is in one area, and the farthest you'll have to walk to a building is maybe 8 minutes!
Met my needs
THIS SCHOOL WORKED FOR WHAT I NEEDED. SOMETIMES HAD A HARD TIME GETTING IN TOUCH WITH MY ADVISOR. WOULD RECOMMEND TO OTHER STUDENTS LOOKING TO GET THEIR DEGREE ONLINE. THEY HAVE A GOOD COURSE/PROGRAM SELECTION.
