History
The fall of 1919 began the seminary's first academic year. Living quarters for boarding students and administrative offices were located in two cramped houses in midtown Detroit, on Martin Place. As enrollment jumped and more dormitory space was needed, Bishop Gallagher leased a duplex and later a seventy-room apartment building on Alexandrine Avenue.
Education
The College of Liberal Arts, through its undergraduate degrees (A.A.M., A.B., B.Phil.) and diploma programs, forms students with a deep appreciation and knowledge of philosophy and the humanities. The School of Theology, through its graduate degrees (M.Div., M.A.P.S., M.A., S.T.B., S.T.L.) and diploma program, inculcates the knowledge, dispositions and skills required of those who will minister in the Church.

Library services
Career Services, through the Institute for Lay Ministry (ILM) at Sacred Heart Major Seminary, exists to assist students and alumni in discerning how to best utilize their diploma or degree program, together with their gifts and talents, to serve the Church in the world.
Medical services
Clinics and local hospitals provide professional assistance to the seminary community, guests and visitors. The Detroit Fire Department operates a full paramedic rescue unit 24 hours a day, which can be dispatched to the seminary at any time.
