Review about Veterinary Medicine program at LSMU
Studying veterinary medicine at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences has been a very formative and mostly positive experience for me. One of the biggest strengths of the program is the relatively small group sizes, which really make a difference in day-to-day learning. Because the groups are smaller, there is a lot of hands-on practical work, and you are not just observing from the back of the room. You get real opportunities to practice skills and build confidence early on. The relationship between professors and students is another strong point. Many professors genuinely take the time to get to know you, and this creates a supportive learning environment where it feels comfortable to ask questions or ask for help. This personal approach made me feel more motivated and engaged throughout my studies. Most departments are well organized and focused on practical learning. The equine department, however, has been slightly lacking in the past, particularly in equine surgery, which was more theory-based due to limited staff. That said, the department has recently gained a dedicated equine surgeon, so there is a lot of hope and expectation that the practical side of equine surgery will continue to improve. Overall, my experience at LSMU has been challenging but rewarding, and it has helped prepare me well for a future career in veterinary medicine.
Excellence Through Community & Continuous Growth
LSMU is a large university, yet it consistently feels close-knit. You are never far from a friendly, familiar face—whether among fellow students, the wider medical community, professors, or support staff. Moving to a new country and starting at a new university is a daunting experience for anyone, and even as a mature student, I shared the same anxieties about leaving home and the familiar behind. From the very beginning of my studies at LSMU, it was clear that the teaching staff genuinely care about their students and are invested in their success. They are approachable, supportive, and open to feedback—both positive and constructive—which they actively use to enhance the learning experience. There is a strong sense of mutual support among students across all years, with peers always willing to offer academic advice, guidance, or simply a friendly conversation. Beyond the academic curriculum, LSMU offers a wide range of extracurricular opportunities, including sports, choir, and student-led professional organisations. These groups provide valuable chances to participate in organising conferences and events, further enriching the student experience. One area for potential improvement would be expanding equine and wildlife practice opportunities. While the university offers excellent practical exposure in small animal medicine—which aligned well with my personal interests—broadening opportunities in other areas would benefit the wider student community. Overall, my experience at LSMU has been excellent. It is a university that continues to grow, evolve, and strive for improvement, and I am grateful to have been part of its community.
LSMU Veterinary Medicine (English)
I chose LSMU and their veterinary medicine degree due to the capturing factor of small group sizes and the practical aspect offered to students. The cost of studies was also very competitive in continental Europe, and the city itself, read to be small, cosy, and relatively safe. Upon arrival and commencement of my studies, I found myself very much pleased with my choice. I found the small group sizes to be such a positive part of my studies and I believe there is a certain personalised experience that you can receive from this university. From conversations with students from different universities, it seems that LSMU has a greater focus on practical based learning, which is an incredibly motivating way to learn. Of course there are always areas that can be improved upon, but what I enjoy observing, is that the university tends to listen to and, for the most part, actively take on board the student suggestions in order to better the modules and teaching process for the younger years. The large animal cattle sector is a major strength - teaching wise - for the university. The lecturers and vets are all quite knowledgeable (in all areas of the uni) but the LA Cattle professors and lecturers are incredibly engaging and spend a lot of time improving teaching methods to better student learning. I am overall extremely pleased with my choice of university, I do believe that most of the motivated students are quite independent and this university builds upon that. It is often that you hear students finding extracurricular practice during summer and winter holidays.
